Ion Exchange Resin is a polymer material with ion exchange function. It is usually composed of an insoluble three-dimensional mesh skeleton and active groups connected to the skeleton. These active groups can dissociate ions in water, thereby exchanging with other like ions in the solution.
Ion exchange resins are widely used in water treatment, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, food, sugar making, and environmental protection. In water treatment, it can be used to soften hard water, remove heavy metal ions, organic matter and radioactive substances in water, etc. In the pharmaceutical and chemical industries, ion exchange resins are often used in the purification, separation and concentration of drugs.
According to the properties of the active groups, ion exchange resins can be divided into two categories: cation exchange resins and anion exchange resins. Cation exchange resins contain acidic groups, such as sulfonic acid groups (-SO3H) or carboxyl groups (-COOH), which can exchange with cations in the solution. Anion exchange resins contain basic groups, such as quaternary ammonium groups (-N(CH3)3+) or primary, secondary, and tertiary amine groups, which can exchange with anions in the solution.
